ByteDance's Volcengine launched Seedance 2.5, an AI video model that natively generates 30-second clips from up to 50 reference assets, intensifying competition with open-source rival MiniMax in a market where keeping characters and scenes consistent across long sequences remains the industry's hardest problem.
The launch lands as Citi maintains its Buy rating on MiniMax's parent, MINIMAX-W (00100.HK), citing the cost advantages of its rival H3 model. "H3 has significant cost advantages," Citi said, keeping a High Risk flag on the stock.
Seedance 2.5 improves on Seedance 2.0 in instruction following, long-form narrative, realism and audiovisual quality, Volcengine said. It supports more than 10 languages with subtitles and lip-sync, and through ByteDance's Dreamina platform adds a Long Video Mode for projects up to three minutes. Dreamina prices Seedance 2.5 from $0.097 per second, versus $0.066 for Seedance 2.0, with a price-matching program for qualifying plans.
The commercial stakes are mounting. Longer, consistent AI video opens new revenue in creative advertising and industrial simulation, while the closed-versus-open split — Seedance 2.5 stays proprietary while MiniMax's H3 went open source — will shape which model wins enterprise and agency budgets.
Most AI-generated videos look convincing in the first few seconds, but character appearances, backgrounds and camera movement drift as a story unfolds, forcing creators to regenerate entire shots. Seedance 2.5 addresses this by accepting up to 50 reference assets — images, video clips and audio files — in a single project to anchor character identity, product appearance, environments, camera style and pacing. For filmmakers, that means testing camera angles, lighting and pacing before production begins; for brands, it means turning existing product images into campaign videos across websites, TikTok, Instagram Reels and ecommerce listings without rebuilding each clip.
The competitive field is crowded. Buzzy, an AI video platform, now integrates Seedance 2.5 alongside Sora 2, Kling 3.0, Runway Gen 4 and Hailuo 2.3, giving creators a direct comparison of generation methods. The strategic split is stark: ByteDance keeps Seedance 2.5 proprietary, while MiniMax released H3 as open source — a move Citi argues gives it a cost edge that could pressure proprietary rivals on price. For investors, the question is which approach captures the fastest-growing slice of AI content spend. MINIMAX-W trades with a High Risk flag from Citi, which sees H3's cost structure as a durable advantage even as ByteDance pushes longer, higher-fidelity output.
